The city of Antioch announced yesterday that council member Gary Agopian has passed away. Agopian was elected in November of 2010, and announced his brain cancer diagnosis publicly in September of 2013. He bravely vowed to continue serving the citizens of Antioch while continuing to fight the disease. He was able to keep his promise and make an appearance at nearly every single meeting until his conditioned worsened recently.
During Agopian’s time on the council, he also found time to become instrumental in the creation of the city’s Graffiti Subcommittee. He also served on the City Council’s Budget Committee and helped the city manage its finances in difficult economic conditions.
Agopian served on countless other boards and committees as a council representative. He served as liaison to the Chamber of Commerce, on the Community Advisory Board to the S.F. Bay Water Transit Authority, and as the City’s representative to the East County Water Management Association.
Agopian will be remembered by many residents of the city and beyond for his tireless commitment to the serve the city despite his exhausting battle with cancer. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this time.
