Cathedral City Council Member Sam Toles Announces Resignation

Cathedral City Council Member Sam Toles submitted his letter of resignation Thursday. The first-term member recently took an executive position with a large internet company in New York City. Since accepting the job, Toles has missed numerous council meetings, prompting scrutiny by local media outlets.

The council can now hold a special election or opt to appoint a replacement. Toles has requested that the council appoint his mother, Carol Lang, to assume his seat until the close of his term in November. If Toles resigns on August 13, as expected, City Attorney Charles Green says a special election to replace him could not be held until June 2, 2015. An appointment is therefore considered likely. Mayor Kathy DeRosa said the council will probably discuss the matter at its first meeting in September.

Toles was first elected to the council in 2010, beating out incumbent Paul Marchand. In November, he announced that he would not be seeking re-election.
