Modesto Mayor Wants City Manager Finalists’ Names Released

There are five finalists in the running for Modesto’s next city manager, and Mayor Garrad Marsh wants the public to know who they are.

The mayor has called for releasing information about the city manager finalists in an effort to foster greater transparency. But he needs the backing of the city council and the city’s executive search consultant, Roseville-based Bob Murray & Associates, beforehand.

Marsh says the full disclosure would allow the public to conduct its own vetting process, bolstering confidence in whoever the new pick may be. He’s hoping the names will be released after October 20 when two panels are scheduled to interview the five candidates.

Council Members Jenny Kenoyer and Bill Zoslocki are already on board.

“I don’t know why not,” Kenoyer said. “We should have an interest in letting people know. It’s important for people to see we are not secretive.”

Council Members Tony Madrigal and Dave Lopez, however, fear the release could jeopardize the finalists’ standing at their current jobs and discourage future candidates from applying.

Modesto’s last permanent city manager, Greg Nyoff, left in May to become the top administrator for Oxnard. His interim replacement, Jim Holgersson, is one of the candidates for the job.
