The Benicia City Council has reversed last year’s decision to permit two marijuana dispensaries.
On May 8, the Council voted to move forward with zoning changes that would prohibit cannabis retail businesses. City staff will now draft those changes.
The about-face came during discussions on buffer zones between cannabis enterprises and sensitive spaces such as parks.
Benicia’s actions apply only to dispensaries. Cultivation and manufacturing businesses will not be banned and those permits are still being processed as usual.
Nine cannabis businesses were in the running for the open retail spots following the vote last year.
