A new resolution approved by the Westminster City Council contains a peculiar and provocative claim — that the Vietnamese government is spreading disinformation in order to impact local politics in the City of Westminster, California.
The allegation was first made by Mayor Tri Ta. Then came the resolution, which enshrined the claim as official city policy.
Ta, Kimberly Ho, and Charlie Nguyen voted in favor of the resolution condemning foreign interference. Sergio Contreras, the only member without Vietnamese heritage, and Tai Do abstained.
But are the allegations of meddling by the Vietnamese government even true? Ta has presented no evidence to that effect, nor does the resolution, notes Voice of OC.
“Clearly [the resolution] can be interpreted as a move to label a communist any member of the public who disagrees with the Mayor and the City Council majority,” said Contreras. He called it “vague and frankly downright scary.”
Do accused Ta of using the issue to scare residents into refraining from a petition to recall the majority. Right now, all five council members are facing recall threats.
