New Law Allows Candidates to Use Campaign Cash for Childcare

California’s governor has signed legislation that will make it easier for parents of young children to run for public office.

AB 220 (Rob Bonta, D-Oakland) will allow candidates to use campaign funds for childcare expenses they incur during campaign activities. It’s a move proponents say will also increase gender parity in elections and encourage more women to run for office.

AB 220 codifies and clarifies guidance from the Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) issued nearly three decades ago.
