San Diego Mayor’s Race Comes Down to Two Democrats

The next mayor of San Diego will be a registered Democrat.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that City Councilwoman Barbara Bry has opened a comfortable lead over Councilman Scott Sherman for the number 2 spot. That means Bry will face off against Assemblyman Todd Gloria in November.

Both Bry and Gloria are members of the Democratic Party, though the county’s Democratic Party has endorsed the assemblyman.

Gloria is the favorite, but some political strategists who spoke to the Tribune said they could see an opening for Bry. If she can hold enough Democrats while also taking a sizable chunk of the center-right vote that went for Sherman, a Republican, she has a chance.

If nothing else, the bid for San Diego Mayor is shaping up to be a competitive race.
