Richmond Hires Its First Black Female Chief of Police

Bisa French has served as the interim chief of the Richmond Police Department for nearly a year. Soon, she’ll be made its permanent leader.

French will take over on Aug. 1, becoming the department’s first black female chief. Her selection has been heralded as an important milestone for the city and law enforcement.

French has been with the Richmond Police Department since 1998. She was promoted to assistant chief in 2016.
