State, Cities Sue Trump Over Census Threat

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over an executive memorandum ordering undocumented immigrants not to be counted in the 2020 U.S. Census. The state is joined in the lawsuit by the cities of Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Oakland.

If it were to be implemented, a policy of discounting undocumented immigrants could result in the loss of at least two California congressional seats, according to Claremont McKenna College researcher Douglas Johnson (LAist).

Trump’s order is unlikely to happen for a variety of legal and logistical reasons. But California isn’t taking any chances. The state is home to some 2,200,000 undocumented immigrants.
