LAPD Officer Says “Swat Mafia” Creating Culture of Violence and Brutality

A SWAT officer with the Los Angeles Police Department has filed a civil lawsuit alleging a culture of violence and glorification of police brutality within the specialized unit.

The suit filed by SWAT Sgt. Tim Colomey refers to a “SWAT mafia” that disregards department policies and de-escalation tactics in favor of brute force. Colomey’s attorney cites three incidents, including one in which a unarmed homeless man was shot dead from a SWAT helicopter.

Leadership “turned a blind eye” to the problems, says Colomey. He had previously reported the incidents to internal affairs.

The allegations contained in the civil suit are shocking. Read more at the Los Angeles Times.
