State Auditor Says CA at Risk of Mismanaging Coronavirus Funds

State Auditor Elaine Howle has warned that California is at great risk of mismanaging $71 million in federal funds for COVID-19. Howle cautioned the governor in a Tuesday letter, adding she would invoke a state law allowing her to keep watch over 18 agencies tasked with spending the money.

Six out of the nine programs that have received or will receive pandemic funding were flagged during recent audits.

“These past audit findings highlight issues with departments’ abilities to manage federal funds appropriately even before the significant influx of federal COVID-19 funding,” Howle said in her letter.
