Jocelyn Yow was sworn in last week as mayor of Eastvale, making her the youngest female mayor of color in California history.
At 25, Yow is also the mother of an infant.
“Being a new mom to a 6-month-old further fuels my passion to serve my community,” she said in a statement. “Local government makes decision that affect our daily lives and is where we can directly see democracy in action.”
Yow said she hopes more young women and mothers will run for public office.
“It is crucial that we include the perspectives of young women and mothers while making important decisions that impact the families we serve,” said Yow.
As if motherhood and the mayorship weren’t impressive enough, Yow is also pursuing her master’s degree in government at Harvard Extension School. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Norco College and UC Berkeley.
