The Laguna Beach City Council voted to censure one of its members, George Weiss, on Tuesday. The vote was 3-2, with Toni Iseman and Weiss himself voting against the resolution.
Weiss is accused of divulging “confidential information” from a closed session meeting on the renovation of Hotel Laguna to a resident who is fighting the project. Mayor Bob Whalen has accused Weiss of violating the Ralph M. Brown Act.
Weiss, however, says the closed session discussions were an attempt to thwart transparency. It’s the mayor and the other city council members who have undermined the Brown Act by keeping these discussions secret, Weiss and Iseman claim.
“They’re trying to cover up the city’s actions on one of the most controversial projects in our city,” said Iseman.
This is the second time this year that the Laguna Beach City Council has censured one of its members. Councilman Peter Blake was censured in March for derisive comments against colleagues.
