The Huntington Beach City Council is prepared to let voters decide whether to legalize commercial marijuana in the city.
Last week, leaders voted 5-2 to direct staff to develop two resolutions placing commercial legalization on the November ballot. One measure would legalize sales, while the other would impose taxes of up to 6% for retailers and 1% for nonretailers.
Councilmembers Mike Posey and Erik Peterson were the “no” votes.
Currently, there are only two cities in Orange County where recreational sales are legal — Costa Mesa and Santa Ana. Councilman Dan Kalmick is confident that Huntington Beach would join the fray if voters are given the chance.
