Los Angeles City Council Members Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo remain defiant in the face of numerous calls to resign. So on Monday, Acting Los Angeles City Council President Mitch O’Farrell used the one card he has — removing both officials from various committee assignments.
“With Cedillo and De León refusing to step down, O’Farrell said the two had been removed from committees that deal with real estate development, housing, homelessness and other issues,” the Los Angeles Times reports.
De León had chaired the Homelessness and Poverty Committee and served on the Budget and Finance Committee. Cedillo had chaired the Housing Committee.
The one committee both men will still be a part of is the Board of Referred Powers, since the City Charter requires every member to sit on at least one committee. That body rarely meets.
Tuesday, the City Council will choose its next President. The role was previously held by Nury Martinez, who has resigned. O’Farrell does not want to keep the title permanently.
