Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao is getting a raise, but it’s nowhere near the $75,000 city leaders were flirting with a couple of weeks ago.
The eye-popping figure was recommended by the council’s finance and management committee at a time of record deficits. An outcry ensued and council members, as well as the mayor herself, began openly criticizing the idea.
Thao said she would reject any raise beyond what is legally required by the city charter. So she ended up with $13,000 more per year, approved on a 6-2 vote by the city council.
Thao’s annual salary will increase from $202,999 to $216,000.
