San Francisco’s Mid-Year Housing Numbers Are a Big Disappointment

San Francisco continues to lag significantly on housing construction, recent data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development show.

Through the first 181 days of 2023, the city permitted 179 new units. That’s less than one housing unit per day, and less than several nearby cities.

During the same time period, the following Bay cities all surpassed San Francisco in approvals:

• San Jose (1,276 new units)
• Santa Clara (669)
• Santa Rosa (502)
• Fremont (461)
• Oakland (406) 
• Vacaville (394) 
• Milpitas (371)
• Concord (308)
• Morgan Hill (201)
• Sunnyvale (196)

San Francisco needs to build some 82,000 housing units by the end of 2031 per its approved housing element. That’s around 10,000 new homes per year.
