
An Orange County judge has refused to halt the recall election against Santa Ana City Councilmember Jessie Lopez, despite serious questions about its legality.
A Santa Ana resident was seeking an injunction after the Orange County Registrar of Voters acknowledged that an outdated district map had been used during the recall process, potentially invalidating hundreds of signatures. Additionally, over 1,000 residents who should have received a mail-in ballot for the election did not receive one.
Despite these concerns, the City Council declined to halt the recall election last week. Now a judge has also allowed the recall to move forward.
In an email to LAist, Lopez said she was “disappointed that our judicial system is allowing this illegitimate recall — and with it the disenfranchisement of more than 1,100 voters who are overwhelmingly Latino, renters, and mobile home residents — to move forward."
