Job Description
The City of Ventura Fire Department has an immediate vacancy for the position of Hazardous Materials Specialist. The Ventura City Fire Department is a Participating Agency (PA) with Ventura County Certified Unified Program Agency (CUPA). The Hazardous Materials Specialist works under general supervision and is responsible for performing technical and specialized inspections and investigative work in the area of hazardous materials control and fire prevention. The position is responsible for reviewing and approving hazardous materials, fire protection, and other plans and specifications. The Hazardous Materials Specialist is also responsible for conducting hazardous materials and fire prevention inspections. This is a civilian, non-safety position.
This is an advanced journey-level classification. The Hazardous Materials Specialist is expected to perform advanced journey-level inspection work. Provides technical expertise on hazardous materials to Fire Department staff. Advancement to this classification is not flexibly staffed. Acts as functional lead to other inspectors.
The Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will have experience with hazardous materials and fire code enforcement, the ability to professionally communicate and utilize various software programs and technology to deliver effective service and will possess applicable ICC Certifications (or be able to quickly obtain the required certifications as indicated).
Position Qualifications
A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to 1) Graduation from college with a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry or a closely related field and two years of experience performing hazardous materials or fire prevention enforcement duties, including responsibility for plan checking and field inspection of hazardous materials facilities or 2) Graduation from college with an associates' degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry or closely related field and five years' experience performing hazardous materials or fire prevention enforcement duties, including responsibility for plan checking and field inspection of hazardous materials facilities.
License: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License and an acceptable driving record is required.
Certificates: Certificate of completion of PC 832 is highly desirable prior to appointment and required within one year of appointment. Possession of, or the ability to obtain within 180 days of appointment, a valid California Underground Storage Tank (UST) Inspector Certificate as required in the California Code of Regulations section 2715(j). Within 180 days of appointment, incumbents must complete and pass an aboveground storage tank training program and pass an approved Unified Program Agency examination as required by the California Health and Safety Code section 25270.5.
Desirable: Plans Examiner certification from the International Code Council; a University of California Hazardous Materials Management certificate; International Code Council Fire Inspector certification or; California State Fire Marshal Fire Inspector I courses and certification.
