World class city seeks proven leader to become City Manager

The City of Long Beach (pop.470,000) is a diverse full-service and vibrant award-winning city consisting of 6,000 employees and 14 departments including the Long Beach Airport. It is home to the 2nd largest port in the US. The City’s FY 2020 combined budget is approximately $2.8 billion, and the City is regarded as one of the best managed and progressive municipal governments in the country, and is a leader in economic and community development, sustainability and public safety.

As a result of the recent departure of their long-tenured and renowned City Manager, the City Council has launched a national search to identify a community and citizen-focused leader to become their next City Manager. This is an attractive opportunity and requires an astute leader and manager capable of leading a large and complex organization during a period of growth, while maintaining strong basic services to meet the needs of an engaged and active citizenry. Visit www.longbeach.gov  for more information on the City of Long Beach.

The successful candidate will lead a government that values innovation, diversity and inclusion, while delivering quality customer service equitably to all segments of the Long Beach community.  The City Manager will be a visionary who embraces “best practices” in leading a municipal organization and have a track record of outstanding fiscal, communications, people, organization, strategic and economic development success.

Appointed by and reporting to the City Council, the City Manager must possess tremendous leadership skills and be able to foster a great working relationship with the Mayor and Council, and a diverse array of internal and external stakeholders.  Competitive candidates will have demonstrated experience in performance management, civic engagement and a passion for public service.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Public or Business Administration or a closely related field and ten years of progressively responsible executive management experience is required. Prior city management level experience is desirable.

The City Manager recruitment is being conducted nationally by The Hawkins Company (search consultants).  They will review all written materials submitted, screen and evaluate candidates.  The most highly qualified candidates will be invited to participate in an on-site interview.  Interested and qualified individuals are invited to submit a resume and cover letter with current salary information electronically to cm.colb@thehawkinscompany.com .  Resumes received by December 28, 2019 will receive first consideration.
