Located nearly halfway between the metropolitan powerhouses of San Francisco and Sacramento, Suisun City is a hidden gem of the Bay Area. Suisun City is easily accessible from Interstate 80 via Highway 12 and Amtrak’s Capitol Corridor commuter rail stop at the Train Depot, right into the heart of the City’s historic Waterfront District, making it a prime location for potential job seekers as well as homeowners.
The City of Suisun City was incorporated on October 9, 1868, as California’s 30th city. Suisun City is a General Law city with a Council-Manager form of government and is governed by a five-member City Council.
The Mayor and City Council are elected independently in non-partisan elections to serve four-year terms in office. The Mayor Pro-Tem is selected by the City Council from among its members. The City has been remarkably successful this year with four new council members (two were appointed in 2023).
City departments include Administrative Services, Building & Public Works, Development Services, Fire, Police, and Recreation & Community Services. Fire Protection for Suisun City has recently doubled in size and operates on a 24/7 basis, augmented by an outstanding mutual aid climate in Solano County. The City’s all-funds budget for fiscal year 2023-24 totals $36.5 million and the City has a total of 167 positions.

The next City Manager will be presented with a number of known challenges and opportunities in which to excel:
· Suisun City’s unique location on the water provides opportunities for both quality-of-life improvements and developments that most other cities cannot enjoy. The City must leverage this priceless resource to its fullest.
· Opportunities exist to utilize more efficient maintenance, sustainability, and partnerships to improve streets and landscaping.
· Tax Measure S is up for sunset in 2026 and a new tax measure will be needed to continue. This will be a task for the new CM.
· With access to freeway and rail, Suisun City is a community ideally located for commuters to both the Bay Area and Sacramento. Despite a high percentage of commuting residents, Suisun City still has very engaged community members who share a sense of community. Through diversification of its amenities, festivals, and events, the City must strategically keep and increase its participatory residents.
Suisun City is seeking a strong leader and experienced manager to provide effective leadership while coordinating the activities of a municipal organization. The ideal candidate will be a strategic visionary with an innovative mindset who can take a creative approach to solving problems and managing the long-term goals of the City. Ideally, the right candidate will be an excellent generalist with a strong financial acumen and have a proven track record of delivering results.
The ideal candidate will place an emphasis on communication throughout the organization and community. The next City Manager will be expected to become a friendly fixture in the community, engaging citizens and earning their trust. The ideal candidate will also need to be energetic, self-confident, and have an open, approachable management style. The successful candidate will be a diplomatic yet strong leader. They will be able to collaborate effectively with council and staff, will stand behind their decisions, and be transparent and thorough in their communications.
Ideally, the selected candidate will have experience managing in a community adjacent to a marina or waterway. Unique issues, such as periodic dredging of the marina, must be undertaken in Suisun City.
