Deputy Fire Chief

The Deputy Fire Chief serves as the next level of command immediately under the Fire Chief and performs duties such as:
  • Providing highly professional and complex administrative support to the Fire Chief
  • Supervising leadership, technical, and support staff, including employee development and training, assigning work, mentoring, performance evaluations, hiring and selection, discipline, and personnel investigations
  • Developing, implementing, and revising departmental goals, objectives, policies, and procedures; reviews and evaluates work methods and procedures for improving organizational performance and enhancing services
  • Representing the Fire and Emergency Services Department at community events as well as local, state, and regional meetings
  • Managing and participating in the development and administration of the department budget, including forecasting the need for additional funds for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies
  • Establishing and implementing effective training, communications, and safety standards throughout the department to assure emergency readiness
  • Overseeing fire suppression and operations to ensure rapid response and proper staff deployment during emergencies
  • Responding to difficult and sensitive public inquiries and complaints
  • Developing, implementing, and maintaining programs related to departmental activities; analyzes and reports to the Fire Chief on the effectiveness and efficiency of operations

The Deputy Fire Chief will have the ability to advance the department’s core mission, work collaboratively with the community and neighboring jurisdictions, and establish a vision for the future of the organization. Lastly, the successful candidate will have thorough knowledge and understanding of the principles and techniques of fire suppression, emergency medical response, hazardous materials response, technical rescue, and emergency management.
