The Environmental Sustainability Director will be a vital member of the City’s Executive Management Team. The culture of the management team is strongly cohesive and supports open communication and mutual respect.
The Environmental Sustainability Director will oversee all activities of the Environmental Sustainability Department. This position provides highly responsible and complex professional assistance to the City Manager, City Council and others in areas of expertise and acts as the City’s Building Official.
In November 2018, the Woolsey Fire destroyed approximately 460 homes in Malibu. Helping residents to rebuild as quickly and safely as possible is a top priority for the City. The Environmental Sustainability Director will help lead the City’s rebuilding efforts.
Successful performance of the work requires knowledge of public policy, municipal functions and activities, including the role of an elected City Council, and the ability to develop, oversee and implement projects.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in building and safety; be knowledgeable of environmental policy, regulations and best practices; demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills; be detail-oriented, motivated and flexible; have high ethical and professional values and a strong commitment to customer service; display outstanding integrity and judgment; enjoy the challenge of a fast-paced, team-oriented work environment; and possess an engaging and collaborative management style.

Minimum Qualifications Required
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in community development, inspection technology, sustainable development, business or public administration or a related field and five (5) years of supervisory or administrative experience in planning, building and safety, redevelopment, environmental compliance and/or public administration in a municipal setting. Possession of a Master’s Degree in a field noted above and certifications by ICBO/ICC and/or CALBO in multiple inspection disciplines are highly desirable and may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Compensation and Benefits
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications. Salary range is $150,386 - $196,220 
The City also offers an attractive benefits package, which includes:
​PERS Retirement: New members to CalPERS, new PEPRA formula 2% at 62, three-year average, 7.25% member contribution, classic CalPERS members 2% at 55, one-year average. The City does not contribute to Social Security.
Vacation: Starting at 120 hours per 
year, increasing to 160 hours beginning 
the 11th year of service
Sick Leave: 96 hours per year
Holidays: 11 fixed holidays per year
Administrative Leave: 54 hours per fiscal year
Health Insurance: 100% paid coverage for employee and dependant care premiums

Dental and Vision: 100% paid coverage for employee and dependant care premiums
Life Insurance: Life insurance coverage equal to employee’s annual salary, up to a maximum of $175,000
