Job Description

This position will lead the City’s fiscal health and sustainability.  The City of Auburn has 100 full-time employees serving 15,000 residents.  Auburn operates administrative services, police and fire public safety, community and economic development, transit and public maintenance services.  The City currently has 16 enterprise, special revenue and trust funds, and has a total operating budget of $31.3M for FY23-24.

What You Will Do

The incumbent will be accountable for the City’s fiscal sustainability, financial integrity and transparency and regulatory compliance.  Under direction from the City Manager, the Director is a strategic partner with City Council and executive staff on capital planning to ensure Auburn meet its long-term plans and maintain fiscal stability.

Upon hire, the incumbent can expect to work with the City Manager in accurately addressing budgetary and financial needs involving CIP, economic growth initiatives and appropriate staffing levels to continue a high-level of public service and safety.  As we approach the new calendar year and mid-budget cycle, the Director will quickly be needed to provide financial expertise and reporting of current fiscal status and planning for departments and long-term city programs during the uncertain economic climate.

The Finance Department implemented the ERP Pro10 system this year and the incumbent will participate in completing the post-implementation phase.  The position currently has goals in place to identify areas to improve internal controls and systems, and department and citywide financial policies.

Ideal Candidate

 An ideal candidate will be a leader, mentor and strong communicator able to articulate both verbally and in writing. The candidate will have a proactive approach and history of success in municipal finance management.

Minimum Qualifications

 Qualified candidates will possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in accounting, finance, business or public administration, or related field and at least six years of increasingly responsible professional experience in municipal finance and accounting, including three years of management and administrative responsibility.

A master’s degree and/or professional finance or accounting certification (CPA, CMA, etc.) is desirable.
