Salary Range: $68,593 - $89,500 (plus excellent benefits)
Full-time Permanent Position (subject to probation)

Under direct or general supervision by the Environmental Sustainability Director, explains ordinances, procedures and requirements to homeowners, developers and contractors pertaining to land development and improvement permit requests and concerns; processes building permit applications for new construction of building modifications within the City; receives plans, calculates fees, ensures that appropriate licenses are obtained by contractors; routes plans for review and issues permits; schedules, logs and maintains files regarding building inspections; and performs related work as required.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience of complex residential and commercial construction permit issuance within a government agency development department. The ability to learn and apply the City’s permit processing procedures; read and interpret construction documents, building plans, prioritize with a strong sense of urgency, organize, and coordinate work assignments as directed by the Building Official.  must be proficient in using Microsoft programs including experience using Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Access database, and comfortable using software applications. The ideal candidate will have the ability to work in a team environment and have the professional attitude and communication skills to coordinate multiple tasks and meet deadlines; maintain records and track data; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; respond tactfully, deal with conflict diplomatically, and maintain a professional demeanor.

Minimum Qualifications Required

Possession of a valid Permit Technician License from ICC or CALBO. Equivalent to completion of twelfth (12th) grade. College level coursework in building, planning or a related field is desirable. Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in the building, construction, or related industries. Experience in dealing with the public and working in a public agency setting is desirable. Possession of an Associate of Arts degree from a business or community college in an appropriate curriculum is desirable. Must possess and maintain a valid California class C driver license and have a satisfactory driving record. Possession of a certification as a Building Technician, I.C.B.O and/or I.C.C., and/or trade certificates (plumbing, electrical, mechanical combination inspection) are highly desirable.
